Identify Your Goals

Leadership writer and founder of Leadership Management International (LMI) Paul J Meyer spoke of the "storehouse of life" as filled to abundance with treasure too rich to describe.

He described people going to this storehouse with a sieve and coming away empty handed. Or going with a teaspoon, stuffing a little into their pockets and slinking away like thieves feeling they have put one over on the world.

A very few go to the storehouse with a huge front end loader, a siding full of boxcars with a huge powerful engine and take away all that nature has provided for their use!

Their secret?

They have clearly identified what they want out of life!

They know where they are going and how they are going to get there...and when!

You see, if we set our goals small, our achievements will be small.

Do you know anyone who is truly motivated by the opportunity to make a minuscule impact?

To do something small and insignificant?

Small goals are the illegitimate parents of procrastination.

"The sense of paralysis proceeds not so much out of the mammoth size of the problem, but out of the puniness of the purpose." Norman Couzins

If I set a goal to loose one pound a week, the purpose is so puny I will likely loose nothing at all. It isn't worth bothering about.

On the other hand, if I set a goal to loose 20 pounds in a week, I'll likely recognize the task as impossible so I won't be motivated to even try.

Somewhere in between these two extremes is a figure that, (with effort and determination) is :
Attainable. Believable. And important enough to motivate inspiration in me.

Losing three pounds a week for six weeks will make a difference to my waistline, to how I look, to how I feel and to how I feel about myself.

I know I can get excited about that friends! And if I'm excited about it, I can and will do it!

So goal setting shouldn't annoy you, frighten you or bore you!

Whether you are looking at a career opportunity, a business opportunity, stress reduction or time management this process will help.

When you know and apply the SMART Goals process the fulfillment of your dreams is simply a matter of determination, time, and effort.

Henry Ford said, "Whether you think you can or whether you think you can't.....you're right!"

I know you can!

You know you can!

Right!

Len McNally
