How To Make Your Holiday Color Last

Author: Stacey Moore

The holiday season is when you make the rounds of your family and friends. It's a great time to catch up with people you may not have seen all year, and part of the fun is looking your best, including your hair.

Make sure your tresses stay picture-perfect from Thanksgiving on through the New Year with these tips from the A-lister's colorist of choice, Marie Robinson. Robinson is responsible for coloring the locks of nearly every top celebrity filming or living in New York, including Natalie Portman, Rachel McAdams, Sienna Miller and Liv Tyler. Follow these insider suggestions to achieve the holiday look that's right for you.

Tip 1: Anyone can have a little seasonal holiday red in her hair. Temporary rinses are the perfect complement to any festive ensemble. Try a strawberry-toned rinse for blondes; coppers and burgundies for brunettes.

Tip 2: The little black dress is a hit every holiday season. Complement the look with a few contrasting bold highlights in your hair.

Tip 3: When coloring in a salon or at home, it's important to always apply a leave-in treatment with activated silicone and conditioning agents right after the first shampoo. This important step prevents new color from fading with subsequent washings. Robinson suggests using TRESemm' colorTHRIVE Daily Color Lock In Spray or Cr'me.

Tip 4: Another great way to protect color is to install a shower filter that will remove hard water deposits from your shower water. Rust can make both blonde and brown hair very orange and brassy; lime makes blonde a green-gold. Easy-to-install filters for your shower are available in most home accessories departments.

Tip 5: Don't use color-depositing shampoos and conditioners to prolong color. Since hair is healthier at the root and drier the farther down the hair shaft, the pigments from these products are absorbed unevenly, compromising the integrity of the color.
