Making A Big Mistake By Posting Your Email Address

Author: Tara McGillicuddy

One of the biggest mistakes people who have web sites make is posting their email address on their web sites. What seems like a simple way to let people contact you is actually one of the most damaging things you can do. Spam bots just love to harvest email addresses. Not only do you need to worry about receiving unwanted spam you also need to worry about somebody spoofing your email address.

Just think of all the hard work and effort you have put into your business. All it takes is a handful of spoofed email addresses coming from your domain and your business name is now tainted. You also run the risk of your domain name being blacklisted because so many people have reported that you have sent spam even though you haven't. When your domain is blacklisted it means many ISPs and email services will not accept email from your domain.

Then we have programs like Spam Arrest which prevent their paid subscribers from getting spam. However they have been known to actually send spam out to those of us who reply to the paid subscribers verification requests. So when we start getting bombarded with spam who are we to turn to? Spam Arrest of course because they do protect their paid subscribers.

So don't risk it! Remove your email address from your own site and use a contact form instead. Also don't post your email address anywhere else like message boards or classified listings.

If you don't know how to add a contact form to your site this is a simple job that many web site developers can do for you. This cost anywhere from $25 to $100 depending on the company. Even if you are only able to find somebody on the high end it will be well worth it in the long run for your business.
